Do I Need To Aerate My Tulsa Lawn This Fall?

What is lawn aeration?

When soil is compacted, it can cause your grass and landscape plants to become malnourished. Grass turns yellow or brown, and plant vegetation starts to wilt. When grass and vegetation struggle for survival, weeds, pests, and plant diseases can take root. Here's how aeration helps:

  • It reduces soil compaction and allows roots to expand with less resistance.
  • It creates pathways for air and water to get down deep.
  • It provides a way for nutrients from fertilization to reach the root zone.
  • It helps reduce thatch, which is the dead grass and roots layer. (Thatch deters rainwater from getting down into the soil to the roots.)

Why is aeration important in the fall?

Fall is a good time to have your lawn aerated because it is the time of year when roots grow deep into the soil to prepare for the cold nights of winter. Air, water, and nutrients must go down deep to nourish those roots. When you aerate in the fall, your grass will recover quickly in the spring. Aeration also assists your landscape vegetation. It is a particularly important step to take if your soil has a high clay content or areas of heavy foot traffic.

How is aeration done?

Here at Nutri-Green Lawn Care, we use two lawn aeration methods.

Core aeration
Using a lawn aerator, also called a core aerator, our lawn care specialists systematically remove small plugs (or “cores”) of soil from the lawn, creating holes that allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the soil more effectively.

The only drawback to this option is that it only impacts 3-5% of the lawn. Some properties may need more, depending on the composition of the soil and other vital factors.

Liquid aeration
This method uses a product to break down compacted soil and improve its structure. It also helps to enhance soil porosity and creates favorable conditions for air and water movement. Here's what you can expect from a liquid application:

  • It causes small soil particles to clump together to create larger pores for air, water, and nutrient flow.
  • It adjusts the soil grains to improve lawn breathing.
  • It reduces sodium levels in the soil, enhancing nutrient absorption for turfgrass and landscape plants.
  • It covers 100 percent of your yard due to being a liquid treatment.
  • It is odor-free and environmentally friendly.
  • It provides the same benefits as core aeration with additional advantages.

Is aeration all I need?

During the hot summer, fescue grasses can go dormant or die, leading to thinning turf, bald spots, and increased weed intrusion. Our overseeding program, paired with fertility applications and a follow-up evaluation, is the perfect solution for achieving a thick, lush lawn. Our Tulsa lawn care professionals prepare and seed lawns with a specialized seed mix that quickly takes root, filling in bald spots across the yard.

We also provide a starter fertilizer and a comprehensive maintenance guide to ensure fast, premium results. A follow-up evaluation ensures that new grass is thriving.

Can I do my aeration and overseeding myself?

Aeration requires renting or buying a machine and running it. It can be expensive, and performing the aeration wrong can damage your lawn. Hiring an experienced lawn care company to tackle this job is better.
