April Lawn Prep Checklist

Spring in Tulsa doesn’t ease in gently. It often bounces between warm, sunny days and periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms. These fluctuating weather patterns can stress your lawn—especially when it's just coming out of winter dormancy. That’s why April lawn care is so important. It gives your grass the foundation it needs to thrive and prepares it for the hot summer days ahead.

Whether you have Bermudagrass, Zoysiagrass, or a mix of both, your lawn needs specific care starting now. So, what are you up against this year? What does your lawn need in April? That’s where our April lawn prep checklist comes in.

And hey—if you’d rather not deal with the frustration, sweat, and guesswork of lawn care, don’t worry. Your Nutri-Green team is ready to take on the hard work for you—and we’ll make sure it’s done right. With years of experience and proven expertise, we’ll give your lawn exactly what it needs this spring and all year long. Ready? Let’s dive into your checklist and show you where we can help.

Clear out winter debris

After a long winter, your lawn probably has a layer of leaves, fallen branches, and other debris. Now’s the time to rake, clean, and open things up. Removing debris improves airflow and allows nutrients and water to reach the roots of your turfgrass. It also reduces the risk of disease.

While your Nutri-Green team won’t rake your yard for you, we can tackle the thatch—that thick, matted layer of dead material that collects at the base of your grass blades. Through aeration, we break up thatch and open pathways for air, nutrients, and water to penetrate the soil more effectively.

Apply pre-emergent weed control

April is your last chance to apply pre-emergent products that stop certain weeds before they sprout. Once weeds start popping up, it’s too late for this type of treatment.

Weed control is tricky—different weeds follow different growth cycles. That’s where our expertise comes in. We tailor treatments to address both the common and specific weed pressures we've seen on your property in the past.

Mow and water strategically

In the spring, set your mowing height to about 0.5 to 2 inches (see recommended mowing height for your grass here). This height helps block sunlight from reaching weed seeds while avoiding excess moisture retention that can lead to disease.

Let the weather guide you regarding watering. Spring rains may handle hydration, but during dry spells, a little help from the sprinkler can keep your lawn thriving.

While Nutri-Green does not provide mowing services, we provide treatments that help your grass endure drought conditions and resist diseases that flourish in overly wet environments.

Check for bugs

There are many pests that can attack your lawn. Here are a few warning signs that this is happening:

  • Your lawn lifts up like a carpet
  • The tips of your grass are eaten
  • Patches of grass look yellow or brown
  • Areas of your lawn are thinning
  • Dry dirt patches are appearing

If you see signs of pest activity, contact Nutri-Green for assistance.

Test your soil

Every lawn is different, and soil health plays a major role in how your grass grows. A soil test can reveal your soil’s pH level and any missing nutrients. This helps ensure that fertilizers are matched precisely to what your lawn needs.

Soil testing and fertilization can be complex—but we’ve got it covered. We consider everything: soil condition, grass type, seasonal needs, and more. That way, your lawn gets the perfect nutrient boost at just the right time.

Address bare or thin spots

Bare or thinning areas can result from pests, disease, or thatch buildup. Spring is the perfect time to seed with warm-season grasses that thrive as temperatures rise. We make sure the right seeds are applied at the right time—whether that’s now or in the fall.
