Spring Dead Spot
This disease is common in bermudagrass throughout Oklahoma. Spring dead spot disease occurs in highly maintained residential, commercial bermudagrass lawns. It’s most noticeable in the springtime and early summer. You can tell if your lawn is experiencing SDS from affected areas displaying dead and bleached white spots. These spots will appear in circles and can expand in size depending on how much of your lawn is affected. Other signs will indicate weed growth within those affected areas.
At Nutri-Green, we developed the best way to manage and control Spring Dead Spot disease (SDS) in our customer’s lawns.
First, disease elimination.
We will apply a fungicide to stop spreading and begin control. During the summer months SDS subsides – smaller patches will fill in with new grass growth and the fungus will survive in infected plants without visual signs. Next, we follow up and apply two critically timed fungicide treatments to eliminate this disease. Typically this will control SDS. In severe cases however, we may need to apply another. The key to eliminating this problem is utilizing our timely treatments and high-quality products applied with professional application techniques.
Second, damage repair.
The more techniques we use to increase grass growth, the faster those spots will fill in and repair damage. Your lawn program provides the required amount of nutrients a healthy lawn needs so it’s important to continue. However, your lawn is “sick”, therefore we recommend applying additional fertilizers and aerating your lawn to increase fertility and promote growth which will fill in those bare areas and repair the disease damage faster. It’s also very important to maintain a consistent watering program all season. Without proper water this program is not effective. We are at the mercy of Mother Nature’s time clock to fill in the thin spots.

Large (brown) Patch
Large patch disease affects your lawn during the warm season in Oklahoma. The breakout period is early spring when the turf grass is changing weather conditions. Affected areas within your lawn can be determined by thin grass areas along with bleached or yellow areas. Large circular and semi-circular arc will be apparent.
Dollar spot disease is common the most among turf grasses. This disease is most likely to affect residential lawns that are maintained under a low nitrogen fertility program. In Oklahoma, dollar spot disease occurs during high humidity and cool nights such as late spring and early fall season. It appears as white or tan spots of dead turf about the size of a silver dollar. Hence the name dollar spot. On home lawns cut at 1 to 3 inches, dead areas may reach 2 to 4 inches in diameter. These spots may run together, producing large areas of dead turf.
Fairy rings typically appear as rings of dark green and fast-growing turf. Evidence of fairy ring is usually a cluster of mushrooms or toadstools. They usually appear at the outer edge of rings in late summer or early fall, during periods of high soil moisture. Fairy ring is more difficult to see, especially on a well-kept lawn. Fairy ring is more prevalent on lighter-textured soils and on grass with heavy thatch. It is caused by mushroom fungi and different types of soil-inhabiting fungi. Fairy ring is less infectious since the fungi do not directly attack the plants, but rather affect the grass with altering the soil chemistry or physical appearance.
